Go Ho Ho - Gap 2009 Holiday Commercial

Ah!!! Post-modernism at its finest! Doesn't it absolutely.... disgust you? This song tells its viewers that they can do whatever they feel is right (which is the essence of Post-modernism). "What's wrong with that?" you might ask. Two things. One- so, if i want to go murder somebody, thats ok? Ah, no. Two- Jesus is the only Truth we should be seeking. So the idea that "Any truth is the right truth for you, and any truth is the right truth for me" is not true! That's what's so hard about the holiday season. Nobody wants to offend any one else, so they create "Happy Holidays" and "Season's Greetings". In my opinion, I am offended by people attempting not to offend anyone. In this post-modern world, I'm also offend because my religion is being overlooked. Sure, I agree that "all men are created equal" and all are entitled to their beliefs, but c'mon!!! It's all one sided. If "all men are created equal" then I should be able to put manger scene in front of my town hall!! That's CHRISTMAS!!! There would be no CHRISTmas without CHRIST!!! So, go ahead, believe what you want! But know that i believe in spreading my religion (i am instructed to) and that i will be saying MERRY CHRISTMAS this year.

A Christian's Perspective of Human Nature and the Modern Christian

Urban Dictionary is an online dictionary of terms commonly used by today’s society, such as one of my personal favorites, pwnd (yes, that is how it’s spelled). Recently, I have used this website and find it handy and disgusting at the same time. Case in point was a recent football game. I was conversing with a fellow trumpet player about my goals as Senior Section Leader in the following year, one of those being no pelvic thrusts (use your imagination). He was angry that this would not be included, and called me a “Bible humper”. I had a good idea about what this was, but I responded by saying that I was not (which is true). Later that evening, when I got home, I remembered his insult, and looked up on Urban Dictionary. I was appalled at the definition. It was entirely inappropriate and irreverent. And it wasn’t just one definition. There were several. I was lead to ask myself, “Why would someone write this? What would lead someone to reject a person (God) who loves them so much he purchased them with His greatest gift?”. The answer to this question is simply human nature. We’re born into sin, and in sin we remain (Romans 3:23).

Another definition that bothered me was the Jesus Freak entry. But it was not the corruption of the humans in this definition, it was how Christians (literally meaning Little Christ) appeared to the world. Human nature, by my definition, is not just how we adapt and survive; it is also how we react to stimulus. To react is an action, and actions speak louder than words. And if humans encounter a hard choice (stimulus), they will, by nature, react by taking the easier course (sin). Human nature is based not only on instinct (to respond to stimulus), but also what is learned. If Christians say “I’m like Jesus” and act the way I have seen Christians act, the world will gain a false conception of who Jesus was. The fact of the matter is this has already happened! It’s either the world doesn’t see Jesus in us or that we ask people to believe in something we don’t entirely know a lot about. Within my own realm of the world (the Bartlesville Band), I don’t see Jesus in most of the “Christians”. I hear “Christians” chastising our Mormons and other religions, and they curse and speak of sexual immorality, and I don’t hear Jesus. I see “Christians” act in way that is un-Christ like. I am brought to tears. Didn’t Jesus say “Don’t judge, or you will be judged” in the ONLY sermon He preached? Jesus spoke in the middle of the city on a mountain, a passage to this day called The Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5-7). This is Jesus, God, preaching, about what the Christian nature should look like. And notice, he’s not preaching to just his disciples, but also to the sinners in the crowd. Matthew 7:28 says “When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,” The crowds is the key word. These people weren’t just Jews, but also to Gentiles. I am ASHAMED to be called Christian if this is what “Little Christ” is! I am ASHAMED if this is MY reputation. Realize that when you act in a non-Christ way, you not only spoil the holy name of Jesus Christ, but you also ruin an opportunity for someone who could be better equipped for evangelism. Either contribute to the effort or get out of the way for those who are! I’m not judging you who this might apply to, because I myself am not perfect. No human is. But I strive to be perfect, just as God in Heaven is perfect, which is how Jesus lived, and how Christians should live.

I encourage those Christians who feel that this message is directed at them to be Jesus, just as Jesus was YOU on the Cross. In the aforementioned sermon, Jesus said “ For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” The first reaction I got from this passage is that you have to be righteous like Jesus to gain heaven. If this is the case, we have to evaluate two things. One- you don’t gain heaven. It was purchased for you. Second- the term “righteous” is a statement, not a measurement. Jesus’ description of righteous in Matthew 5:20 is not that we should be good to enter heaven, but that the Pharisees were hypocrites, and were not righteous. Jesus directed His sermon at their ways as He criticized how they had taken the law out of context. In fact, Jesus makes this His point in the sermon by stating that He has “come not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it.” (Matthew 5:17). Here, Jesus is implying that He has come to tell the Jews what they have done to distort the law and to express to the Gentiles what the law is supposed to mean. This is what we should be doing. The Sermon the Mount is your guide to the Christian nature. Read several times. Ask someone what this means. It is the key to puzzle that is what witnessing looks like.

So where does that leave us? Since we are Christians, we are His example. Christianity takes faith, and faith is based on righteousness and works. It is based on righteousness by looking like Jesus. Live the sinless life that Jesus gave up for you on the cross so that you can gain favor with God; for “In the way of righteousness there is life;” (Proverbs 12:28). Works also contributes to faith. If you have an abundance of faith, you are driven to show your faith through you works. However, neither of these can gain you heaven; “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:9). In conclusion, Jesus wants you to be like Him, and He wants you to spread the Word, but lets do it like He would and with His guidance.
